Practice Newsletter

Edition 2 | May 2026

The future of personalised health: why “one size fits all” is changing

You may have heard increasing discussion about “personalised medicine”—but what does this actually mean for you as a patient?

Recent UK research is moving us away from simple, one-size-fits-all measures (such as weight or BMI alone) towards a more individualised understanding of health risk. A new tool developed using UK data can assess a person’s risk of developing conditions like type 2 diabetes or heart disease based on a range of factors—not just their weight.

This reflects a wider shift in medicine – two people with the same measurements can have very different health risks.

What does this mean in practice?

Traditionally, healthcare has relied on broad categories:

“Normal” vs “high” blood pressure

“Healthy” vs “overweight”

“Low” vs “high” cholesterol

While these are still important, modern medicine increasingly recognises that:

Risk is individual, not average

Lifestyle, genetics, and existing conditions all interact

Early identification allows earlier, simpler interventions

A growing focus on prevention

This shift comes at an important time. In the UK, overall health is being affected by rising rates of:

Cardiovascular disease

Diabetes

Lifestyle-related illness

Recent national data suggests that people are spending more years of their lives in poorer health, highlighting the importance of prevention and early action.

How this links to your care with SIMP

At the practice, this approach is already part of how we work:

We look at your overall risk profile, not just single results

Annual medicals are designed to pick up early changes

We focus on practical, tailored advice rather than generic targets

Where appropriate, we use testing and follow-up to track trends over time

This means care that is:

More personalised

More proactive

More focused on long-term health

Is my membership fee worth it?

This is a question patients occasionally ask, and it is worth setting out clearly what your membership includes—and how we aim to deliver value while keeping the service sustainable for everyone.

Your annual membership includes:

Unlimited GP and nurse appointments (typically 20-minute GP consultations)

Annual medical (double GP appointment + comprehensive nursing assessment)

A FIT (bowel screening) and cervical screening tests included

Administrative and clinical support (telephone calls, emails, referrals, test coordination, follow-up communication and reports, dispensing medication)

To give some context, the true cost to the practice of a single GP appointment is approximately £75 once overheads are included.

For comparison, a standalone annual medical (Well person health check) for non-registered patients is £395.

Membership therefore represents very strong value, particularly for patients who benefit from continuity, accessibility, and proactive care.

The membership model relies on fair and reasonable use so that we can continue to offer prompt access, continuity, and high-quality consultations.

Seeing the right GP at the right time

We understand that many patients prefer to see a particular GP. Continuity is important, and we always try to accommodate this where possible.

However, we are a small team of GPs, most working part-time. This means individual clinicians are not always available and their appointments can fill quickly.

We therefore work as a collaborative team, sharing information and supporting each other’s patients to ensure continuity of care.

Urgent problems are managed via our duty doctor system:

Each day, one GP is allocated to manage urgent issues. In these situations, it is not always possible to see your usual GP, as priority is given to timely care.

You may be offered another GP if your preferred doctor is unavailable, fully booked, or on leave. We encourage flexibility to help maintain access and reduce delays.

Your membership provides access to the GP team rather than a specific named doctor at all times.

Working with your NHS GP

Many patients remain registered with an NHS GP. We recognise the importance of coordinating care, particularly for prescriptions.

We now have a secure NHS email account, allowing us to communicate more efficiently with NHS practices.

This allows us to:

Share consultation summaries

Request prescription changes more efficiently

Reduce delays compared to postal letters

To enable this, we require your consent. Please complete a consent form at reception or complete the online consent form here.

If you do not wish to give consent, please let a member of the reception team know so we can record this in your file, even if you have told us before, as your previous preference may not have been carried over to our current clinical system.

Our aim is to provide a more seamless connection between your private and NHS care, improving speed, safety, and reliability of communication.

Meningitis B – vaccination update

You may have seen recent reports of a meningitis B outbreak in a UK university, which has led to increased enquiries about protection.

Meningitis B is a serious but uncommon infection. While many younger children are protected through the NHS vaccination programme introduced in 2015, a significant number of teenagers and young adults were not routinely vaccinated.

Vaccination now available

We now have meningitis B vaccines in stock and are able to offer vaccination at the practice.

Cost: £155 per dose

Administration: Given by qualified clinical staff

Course: Typically requires two doses, at least 4 weeks apart.

Who should consider this?

Vaccination is particularly relevant for:

Students preparing to go to university

Young adults living in shared accommodation

Anyone who did not receive the childhood MenB vaccine

For families with children finishing A-levels and planning university, this is a timely opportunity to consider protection.

How long does protection from the Meningitis B (MenB) vaccine last?

Research shows the MenB vaccine provides protection for around five years, although this varies between individuals. The timing of the doses given to babies on the NHS schedule protects them when they are most at risk of infection.

This means that the MenB vaccine given in infancy does not protect teenagers from infection.

You may be considering further vaccination during the teenage years, which is when the risk of meningitis increases again. Anyone choosing to have the vaccine would need a full course, which consists of two doses given at least one month apart.

What to do next

If you or a family member would like to arrange vaccination or discuss whether it is appropriate, please contact reception so we can provide further advice and arrange an appointment.

This is a sensible preventative step for those at higher risk, and we are happy to guide you based on individual circumstances.

Prescription Requests

A gentle reminder that the practice has always operated a 72-hour notice policy for prescription requests. This applies both to written prescriptions and to requests for medication to be dispensed. The timeframe allows us to review your notes and order medication if it is not already in stock.

Please note that weight-loss medications may take up to one week from the time of ordering to arrive. If you require one of these medications, we kindly ask that you notify us at least 7 days before you need to collect it.

And finally…

We would like to thank all our members for supporting the practice and for the trust you place in our team. We remain committed to providing a friendly, accessible, and highly personalised service. Your feedback helps us improve, and your continued membership allows us to maintain the level of care and continuity that makes our practice what it is.

If you ever have suggestions, concerns, or ideas for future newsletters, we would be delighted to hear from you.

With best wishes

Julie Lock

MenB Vaccination – Current Availability Update

We would like to update parents on the availability of the MenB (Meningococcal B) vaccine. At present, there is a national supply shortage, and we are unable to offer the vaccination until new stock becomes available.

The MenB vaccine is an important protection against meningitis and septicaemia caused by meningococcal group B bacteria. It is routinely provided through the NHS childhood vaccination program, and many families also choose to access it privately for additional protection as the disease can occur at any age.

Why is the vaccine unavailable?

This shortage is affecting clinics across the UK. We are monitoring the situation closely and will restock as soon as our supplier is able to deliver more doses. Unfortunately, there is currently no alternative vaccine that protects specifically against meningococcal group B infection.

What parents need to know

Children receiving NHS vaccinations should continue to follow guidance from their GP or health visitor.

Families wishing to arrange private MenB vaccination are welcome to join our waiting list. We will contact you as soon as stock returns.

Symptoms to be aware of

Although meningococcal illness is rare, it can develop quickly. Please seek urgent medical advice if your child develops symptoms such as:

high fever

severe headache or stiff neck

sensitivity to light

a rash that does not fade under pressure

unusually cold hands or feet

extreme drowsiness

We will keep this page updated

As soon as we receive confirmation of new supply, appointments will reopen. Thank you for your understanding while we work to resume this important service.

If you would like your child to be added to our waiting list, please contact us.

Quarterly Newsletter

Edition 1 | Spring 2026

A Message from Dr Ben Kay

Welcome to the first edition of our quarterly practice newsletter.

This newsletter is intended to keep you informed about developments within the practice, to share relevant medical updates that affect your care, and to reinforce the value of proactive, personalised healthcare. As pressures on NHS services continue to grow, we remain committed to offering thoughtful, evidence‑based medicine with time, continuity and clarity.

Over the coming year you will see a number of incremental changes designed to improve both the quality of assessments we offer and the information you receive following consultations. Many of these developments are not immediately visible, but they are aimed squarely at earlier detection of disease, better risk stratification, and more meaningful conversations about your health.

Practice News & Updates

Enhanced Consultation Summaries with Tandem AI Transcribing

We are pleased to announce the rollout of Tandem across the practice. This technology supports consultations by generating a clear, structured summary of your GP appointment.

Tandem is used only to transcribe consultations into the medical record. It does not think, decide, or retain memory beyond the consultation, and all entries are checked by your doctor.

Tandem is now used routinely by default to support consultations, as it has been shown to improve clarity and patient understanding. However, its use is always optional, and patients may request that it is not used at any time.

When Tandem is used, patients consistently report significant benefits, including:

A clearer written record of what was discussed

Improved understanding of diagnoses and management plans

Greater confidence in next steps following the consultation

Following your consultation, where Tandem is used, you will be offered:

A written summary of the discussion

Key findings and agreed plans

Clear next steps and follow-up actions

These summaries can be printed or emailed to you, helping you to reflect on the consultation and share information with family or other healthcare professionals if needed.

Enhancements to Our Annual Health Checks

We have recently updated our annual health check assessments to reflect emerging evidence and best practice. These changes represent a significant step beyond the standard NHS Health Check and are designed to provide a more detailed and personalised risk assessment.

What’s New?

Liver Health Assessment

We now include formal assessment of liver health using validated risk modelling. This allows earlier identification of fatty liver disease and liver fibrosis, conditions that are increasingly common and often silent in early stages.

Bone Health (Women Over 40)

For women aged over 40, we now incorporate fracture risk assessment using FRAX scoring. This helps identify osteoporosis risk earlier and supports timely lifestyle or treatment interventions.

Enhanced Diabetes Risk Assessment

For patients with diabetes, we have expanded our cardiovascular and metabolic risk assessment, incorporating more detailed risk markers beyond routine blood sugar monitoring.

QRISK3 Retained

We continue to use QRISK3 as a core component of cardiovascular risk assessment for all eligible patients.

How This Compares to the NHS Health Check

While NHS Health Checks provide an important baseline screening, our updated assessments:

Use more detailed risk modelling tools

Allow longer consultations to interpret results meaningfully

Focus on earlier intervention and prevention

This enables more nuanced, personalised discussions about your long‑term health.

Blood Testing Costs

Some elements of these enhanced assessments rely on blood tests. NHS England guidance permits NHS trusts to charge private providers for blood testing, and a number of trusts nationally have already implemented this.

Locally, this is being considered by Salisbury NHS Trust. This follows concerns raised about private testing arrangements, and we are keen to ensure that any changes are implemented transparently, fairly and in line with national guidance.

We are in direct contact with the laboratory management team at Salisbury and are actively working towards the best possible financial solution for our patients. Our priority is to ensure high-quality testing at the lowest achievable cost.

Should charges be introduced, the practice will not apply any mark-up to blood test costs passed on to patients. Where costs may become difficult for some individuals, we will also support patients in liaising with their NHS GP to access appropriate testing.

We will keep patients informed as soon as there is greater clarity.

Vaccination Update: MMR, MMRV and Chickenpox

There have been recent changes in the UK to the routine childhood vaccination schedule, with the introduction of the combined MMRV vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella and varicella).

We recognise that some parents and adults may prefer not to receive the combined MMRV vaccine.

At the practice we are able to offer:

MMR vaccination for children and adults who do not wish to have MMRV

Separate chickenpox (varicella) vaccination where appropriate

If you would like to discuss vaccination options for yourself or your child, please contact the practice for advice.

New Counselling Service at SIMP

We are pleased to let patients know that a new counselling service will shortly be available at the practice.

Rob Pratt, a qualified counsellor and EMDR therapist, will be offering counselling sessions from a consulting room at SIMP on Mondays from March.

A warm, relaxed portrait taken with the sea in the background.

People seek counselling for many different reasons. You may be experiencing feelings that feel overwhelming or difficult to understand, or you may wish to explore how past experiences are influencing your present. Counselling can be helpful for a range of concerns, including anxiety, trauma, health-related issues, patterns in relationships or behaviour, loss, or coping with change.

Rob offers a calm, supportive space in which these experiences can be explored thoughtfully, with the aim of gaining clarity and developing more helpful ways forward.

If you would like to explore whether counselling might be right for you, you are welcome to contact Rob directly to arrange a free 15-minute introductory call, during which you can ask questions and discuss your needs.

Using the NHS App to Share Your Health Information

For patients who also use NHS services, we encourage you to review your health record regularly using the NHS App.

In particular, the Documents section of the NHS App can be very helpful. This allows you to view, download, and securely share letters and clinic summaries from NHS consultations, including outpatient appointments and hospital attendances.

If you have recently seen an NHS consultant, downloading the relevant clinic letter and emailing it to us at info@independentdoctor.co.uk can help ensure we have the most up-to-date information about your care. This supports safer, more coordinated decision-making and reduces the need for duplicate investigations or delays in treatment.

Patients who do not use NHS services do not need to take any action.

If you are unsure how to access or download documents within the NHS App, our reception team will be happy to advise.

Member Benefit Spotlight: Preventive, Personalised Care

One of the less visible benefits of membership is the ability to continually refine and improve preventive care.

Membership allows:

Longer, unhurried consultations

Proactive health reviews

Access to advanced risk assessment tools

Continuity with a clinician who knows your history

These elements underpin the changes described above and support earlier detection and better long‑term outcomes.

Staying in Touch

We hope you find this newsletter helpful. If there are topics you would like us to cover in future editions, or if you have questions about any of the updates outlined above, please let the practice team know.

Our aim is to ensure you feel informed, supported, and confident in the care you receive.

This newsletter is provided for information only and does not replace personalised medical advice. Please contact the practice if you have specific concerns.

Dear Patients,

From the beginning of January, I will be taking over from Dr Richard Willis, and I am very much looking forward to meeting many of you. Patients who have been under his care will generally come under my care unless they prefer to continue seeing one of the GPs they already know. Continuity of care has always been central to the philosophy of the practice, along with unhurried consultations, convenient appointment access and friendly, approachable staff. These values will absolutely continue, and the care of all patients to the best of our abilities remains our core objective.

Continuity of care consistently delivers the best health outcomes, as well as the greatest satisfaction for both patients and doctors. It will remain at the heart of how the practice operates.

I am an experienced GP and have worked in the NHS for more than 20 years. I am confident across the full breadth of general practice. I also hold national accreditation as a GP Specialist in Medical Dermatology (GPwER) and spent six years working in the Dermatology Department at Salisbury District Hospital. Alongside my clinical work, I contribute to national GP education through the Primary Care Dermatology Society (PCDS), a UK charity that supports high-quality dermatology education for GPs. While dermatology is an area of additional expertise, my primary focus remains high-quality, whole-person general practice care.

In taking on the practice, I am genuinely looking forward to returning to the core values of general practice: having the time to listen, provide personalised care and build strong doctor–patient relationships.

From January I will be offering appointments on Mondays, Tuesday mornings, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

If you have any questions, please contact the practice team by email at info@independentdoctor.co.uk or, if necessary, by telephone on 01722 415444.

A message from Dr Richard Willis

Dear Patient,

I am writing to let you know that I shall be retiring from medical practice this autumn and will be relinquishing responsibility for the Southern Independent Medical Practice at the end of the year.

I am very pleased to say that ownership of the practice will be transferred to Dr Ben Kay. Many patients will already have met Ben, as he has been working with us on a part-time basis for some months. Currently he is a Senior Partner at Harcourt Medical Centre in Salisbury, where he has worked for 20 years, but will be leaving there to work full time here. He absolutely shares the fundamental philosophy of medical care that has underpinned the practice since I set it up in 1994.

Please be reassured that the other GPs will all remain unchanged.

Our focus remains to provide the best care we possibly can for all patients, with face-to-face consultations, to work outside central government control while still accessing hospital NHS services, and to encourage continuity of care so that patients develop a long-term relationship with the doctors working here. Research has shown that such care provides the best long term health outcomes, as well as the greatest patient and doctor satisfaction.

I know that the practice will be in the best possible hands with Ben taking the lead.

Clearly, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at:
📧 info@independentdoctor.co.uk

With all best wishes,

Update!

Shingrix is now able to be given to adults 18 years and above who are at increased risk of shingles. Previously only licensed from age 50, this is great news for the younger sufferers of what can be an extremely painful condition.

What is the Shingrix vaccination for?

Shingrix vaccination has an unexpected benefit of boosting T cell levels, which is of particular importance. If you are 18 or older, we believe the Shingrix vaccine can offer you additional immunity protection against infection during this extraordinary time. We thought it would be helpful to provide more details on this subject, together with further information in response to some of your questions. We hope you will find this informative.

Why is Shingrix vaccination particularly important at the moment?

Of particular importance is that the Shingrix vaccine appears to have a very significant effect of boosting our levels of T cells.

T cells are a vital part of our immune systems to fight infections. However, as we age, our bodies lose T cells (T cell senescence). This reduction increases the risk of older patients being more susceptible to infections. In our recent article, we provided a link to Episode 38 of the Royal Society of Medicine COVID-19 Series webinar. The place of Shingrix in improving T cell levels was briefly discussed (minutes 28 to 35) during this session. If you have not seen this, we would encourage you to view it.

Why is Shingrix vaccination relevant if I have had/am due for my COVID jab?

There is concern that Covid-19 variants may become prevalent and that these may be more resistant to current vaccines. Also, that during next autumn and winter, the world may see a significant rise in respiratory viral infections, including influenza. This was reported by Public Health England recently.

Boosting your T cell levels could play a very significant part in reducing the risk of these infections causing illness and possibly death, particularly in older patients.

Why is Shingrix better than Zostavax?

The main reason for the change from Zostavax to Shingrix vaccines is due to its very significantly improved effectiveness. Studies show Shingrix typically has over 95% efficacy in the over-65s. This effectiveness remains consistently high in patients over 70 or 80 and appears long-lasting. In contrast, Zostavax efficacy was only about 35 to 40% in the over-65s, reducing in older patients, and has now been withdrawn. Shingrix is suitable for all groups, and in particular if you carry a higher risk of shingles complications.

What causes shingles?

Shingles is caused by a dormant chicken pox virus becoming active again. This is usually years after the original chickenpox infection, and we know that this risk increases as we age. Patients who have not had chicken pox cannot get shingles. Although for most people shingles is a mild infection, it can lead to very serious side effects. Unfortunately, some of the lasting effects can be lifelong, and sadly, in a few patients, the infection can cause death.

Should I have a test to check if I’ve had chickenpox?

We are often asked if you should test to see if you have had chickenpox before having this vaccination. The expert opinion on this is no. Almost all UK adults are assumed to have had chickenpox, even if they were not aware of it. This vaccine is safe to be given to patients whether or not you have had chickenpox in the past.

If I’ve already had shingles, does that stop me from getting it again?

Patients often ask whether having an attack of shingles provides protection against it occurring again, precluding the need for vaccination. The answer again is no. In fact, an episode of shingles merely indicates that you are more susceptible to it. For these patients, it is even more important to consider vaccination.

I’ve got shingles. When can I get the vaccination?

There is no specific length of time that you need to wait after having shingles, but you should make sure the shingles rash has gone away before being vaccinated.

I had the shingles vaccination at my NHS practice

Patients who have previously had the Zostavax vaccination can safely have Shingrix to improve their level of protection.

Shingrix vaccination schedule

For patients aged 18 and older, including those who previously had the Zostavax shingles vaccine, we would strongly encourage you to consider Shingrix vaccination. We are very conscious that this is a significantly expensive vaccine, and sadly, we have no control over the cost. You require 2 doses, 2 to 6 months apart, to complete your course. We will ask for full payment when taking your booking to secure your 2nd dose.

For registered patients the total charge is £480

For non-registered patients the total cost is £500

Our philosophy is to remain in the vanguard of medical care. Providing Shingrix is now an important part of that philosophy.

What side effects can I expect?

As with most vaccines, there are some common reported side effects; however, these are generally mild and pass within a couple of days.

Typical examples include:
Tenderness at injection site or the arm
Headache
Feeling tired/achy

Please contact us as soon as possible to arrange your Shingrix vaccination appointment to ensure you benefit from this important protection.

It’s time to book your flu vaccination

With the imminent arrival of the flu season, you are likely aware of the significance of receiving a flu vaccination once more this season. We would like to remind all patients that, whether at particular risk or not, all children and adults should be vaccinated against influenza. All of our member patients are entitled to receive their flu vaccination from SIMP free of charge, and we would encourage you to contact us early to make your booking.

The facts

Many people think the flu is just a bad cold, but it isn’t. Flu can develop into more serious illnesses, including bronchitis and pneumonia, and can lead to hospitalisation or, in extreme cases, death. The flu vaccine gives the best protection against flu and will stop you from spreading flu to other people who may be more at risk.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccination

From 1 September 2024, those who turn 75 and those age 75 to 79 will be eligible for a free vaccine to protect them from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). RSV is an infectious disease of the airways and lungs, and the infection often causes symptoms similar to a cold but can lead to other life-threatening conditions. This vaccination isn’t normally given at the same appointment as a COVID-19 or flu vaccination. Your NHS surgery will contact you if you are eligible for this vaccination.

COVID-19 booster?

The current guidelines state that it’s safe to have both the COVID-19 booster and flu vaccination at the same time. Your NHS surgery will contact you if you are due any boosters.

The details

We have plentiful supplies of all the Public Health England-recommended flu vaccines for the 2024–25 season.

Please contact us as soon as possible at 01722 415444 to arrange your appointment and to ensure you benefit from the protection available this year. We are also once again welcoming non-members to book in for their flu vaccination, and the cost is £25.00.

Thank you for reading, and we hope to see you soon!

Recent cyber-attack

As you will be aware from the television news and daily press there was a cyber-attack on the NHS 111 service, which was spotted at 7am on Thursday 4th August. Advanced, the firm that provide digital services for the NHS and other clinical providers, took immediate action and isolated all of their health and care environments. Although SIMP are not part of, and do not have links to any NHS systems, our clinical system is hosted by Advanced and was therefore taken down. We have been advised that it may not be restored for another 6 to 8 weeks.

What does this mean?

We are currently unable to view any patient notes, view any bookings or send reminders.

How you can help

We would be grateful when you call or email if you can give us your full name, address, date of birth, telephone number, email address, NHS number, if known, and whether you have any allergies.

If you need a prescription then we can still issue your medication or written prescription, but we will need in addition to the information above, the name of the drug, the dosage, the amount you take per day/week and the amount you require. We are not able to produce invoices so once the system has been restored, we will contact you for the payment.

If you have an appointment that was made prior to the 4th August but is not yet due or is due later in the month or in September or October, please can you drop us an email with your contact details and the time and date of the appointment.

What if I need an appointment or emergency appointment?

Please call us as normal. Our lines are a little more busy than usual because we need to take down more information from you, but we are open from 8.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. There may be occasions where appointments may be double booked, or you may be asked to come in and wait for a space so please bear with us.

Updates

We are sorry for any inconvenience that this issue is causing and thank you for your patience and understanding.

We will publish any updates we receive from Advanced on our website, Facebook and Twitter.

Here is our latest doctor news to keep you updated on GP changes at the practice.

Dr Meadows

As you may already know, we were so sorry that Dr Jeremy Meadows, who had been such an important part of the medical team, decided to give up general practice fully at the end of March.

With the retirement of his wife earlier this year, an eye specialist, they wish to develop their mutual interests together after many years of providing medical care – in Jeremy’s case as a partner in a very busy NHS practice in Southampton before joining us in 2016.

We wish them both every happiness in the future.

Dr Topping

We are looking forward to Dr Edwin Topping joining us this month and confident that he will prove equally popular and caring as Jeremy had been. Ned, as he likes to be called, trained in Southampton, qualified in 2012 and gained his MRCGP in 2018. He has been working as a GP until now at a practice in Havant. He grew up near Salisbury, so was very keen to return to the area.

Ned and his wife (also a GP) have a young daughter and are now living in Bishopstone. He has a particular interest in men’s health and the health of older patients, together with comprehensive GP experience.

Dr Pope

Many of you will already be aware that Dr Jo Pope has return to us, after leaving when it had been thought that her husband would be posted abroad. These plans changed so we are delighted she is back again. She has an interest in the menopause, women’s health and psychological problems.
