New patients: what to expect at Southern Independent Medical Practice

The Southern Independent Medical Practice welcomes new patients and our experienced and caring team is dedicated to providing the best possible care for all your GP needs in Salisbury, Wiltshire and surrounding areas. Here’s what to expect at Southern Independent Medical Practice.

To apply for membership with our HealthPlan, we will need you to complete our New Patient application forms, which remain entirely confidential, but enable us to assess your current and ongoing medical needs.  When you return the forms to us, they are reviewed by our medical team on a case by case basis. This process is to ensure fairness to all our existing members, by not over-subscribing, and to make sure that we have enough appointments available each week as our members’ needs change.

When your application has been assessed, you will receive a letter from us confirming the outcome. If you are accepted as a member, you will be invited in for an introduction consultation with one of the GPs. This consultation is for you to tell us a little about yourself and to find out more about the practice. This is typically 20-30 minutes long.

After that, you will be invited to book in for your annual health check. There are two appointments required – the first is with the nurse and lasts approximately 30 minutes. She will carry out your routine checks, including height, weight, blood pressure and a fasting blood test. Then, about two weeks later, you will have a 40-minute appointment with one of our GPs to review the results of the nurse checks. Your GP will also carry out a full examination, which will vary depending on your age. The results of the nurse checks and GP examination are then collated into a written report and sent to you. If there are any recommendations or follow-ups needed, you will be notified of this.

As a member, you are entitled to unlimited routine nurse and GP appointments. Standard GP appointments are 20 minutes long and we pride ourselves on being able to offer unhurried and flexible appointments. We will send you an email, where you have given us permission to do so, the day before to remind you about any upcoming appointments.

If, for whatever reason, your application is unsuccessful, we will write and let you know the reason why.

We are open from 8.30am to 6.00pm from Monday to Friday. Out of these hours there is an emergency number available with a GP at the end of the phone to help you.

Should you require medication, we have an in-house dispensary. Many items can be prescribed for less than the cost of a current NHS prescription.
