If you are travelling outside Europe or America, it is highly likely that you’ll need one or more travel vaccinations to protect you against certain illnesses, including yellow fever, hepatitis A and B, tetanus, polio, diphtheria and meningitis. It is advisable to book a travel consultation with us at least 10 weeks prior to your trip, as some vaccinations require multiple doses to be scheduled over a number of days, weeks or even months.
As we have a duty of care to our patients, and because processes and health-risk advice is constantly reviewed, we do not carry out travel assessments on behalf of other GP practices or travel centres. We are also not authorised to provide advice or medication for altitude or mountain sickness.

Yellow fever is one of the nastier, more aggressive tropical diseases; it cannot be cured and its danger should not be underestimated. The rules about whether or not you need a yellow fever jab are complex, and it’s not a vaccination you can always access locally.
Fortunately, Southern Independent Health is a designated yellow fever vaccination centre – meaning you can access both the vaccine and all the advice you’ll need before travelling to a yellow fever zone.
The vaccinations you may need depend on your destination, your plans while you’re away and your vaccination history. The NHS guide to travel vaccinations (https://www.nhs.uk/vaccinations/travel-vaccinations/) is a useful starting point. It explains when to seek advice, how to check recommendations for your destination and which vaccinations may be available through the NHS. If possible, seek travel health advice at least 4–6 weeks before you leave.
Yellow fever is a disease transmitted by mosquitoes in tropical regions of South America and Africa. If you are bitten by an infected mosquito, you will likely experience symptoms after 3-6 days, including aches and pains, headache, loss of appetite, fever, nausea and vomiting. In around 15-25% of patients, these symptoms become more serious, resulting in acute haemorrhagic fever and ultimately organ failure.
No – which is why preventive measures are so important. As well as getting the yellow fever vaccination you will need to be fastidious about avoiding mosquito bites with net, insect repellents and protective clothing.
If you are travelling to Africa or South America it is likely that you will need the yellow fever vaccine – though the list of countries and their conditions is complex and always changing, which is why it’s best to consult your doctor at Southern Independent Health for travel advice well in advance of your departure.
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is a legal requirement if you are entering countries where there is a risk of either contracting or spreading the disease. You will not be allowed entry into the country you are travelling to if you do not have your yellow fever vaccination certificate.
At least 10 days before you enter the country you are travelling to – but we strongly recommend you contact us well in advance to make sure you receive all the specialist travel advice you need.
